The History of the Berliner Kindl German Restaurant and Deli

Our restaurant was established in 1987 by Maria-Theresia Reid. The name of our restaurant remains a tribute to Maria, a “kid from Berlin”.  Born in Berlin, Germany in 1936, she opened the restaurant in 1987 as a small lunch and deli, open 5 days a week from 11am-3pm

Sharon and Freddy Trube bought the restaurant from Maria in 1997 and proudly served the Black Mountain community for 26 years!

Friedhelm Trube is from Darmstadt, Germany, and came to the US in 1981.  Sharon Trube is originally from Maiden, NC. Freddy and Sharon expanded the hours to include dinner, and expanded the size and re-modeled the building in 2003.  They converted the Broadway street-front area, which was a hair salon owned by Helga Atwood, originally from Munich, Germany.  The construction doubled the size of the Berliner Kindl and Freddy designed the restaurant to remind him of the charming, communal restaurants he remembered in Germany.

Roger and Kristy Schultz are delighted and proud to continue the tradition of the Berliner Kindl.  Roger, originally from Brainerd, Minnesota and Kristy, originally from Yonkers, NY, met and married in South Florida.  Roger is connected to German culture and cuisine through his grandparents, as well as the time he spent in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Zweibrucken.   Roger and  Kristy first encountered the town of Black Mountain when they fled to NC to escape a hurricane.  Enchanted by the mountains and the warmth of the community, they returned to visit frequently. Roger and Kristy are excited to continue providing authentic German food and beverages to the vibrant community of Black Mountain.
